Toxic fumes turn deadly in UP’s Kalyanpur area as safety lapses during septic tank cleaning claim two lives, raising serious concerns over hazardous manual practices
Kanpur: In a tragic incident that has once again highlighted the dangers of manual septic tank cleaning, two individuals a father and his son lost their lives after allegedly inhaling toxic gases in the Kalyanpur area of Kanpur during the early hours of Wednesday, police officials confirmed.
Midnight Cleaning Turns Fatal
The incident unfolded at a residential apartment complex in Goa Garden, where three members of a family had entered a septic tank for cleaning around midnight. The victims have been identified as Jawed (45) and his son Aqib (25), while another relative, Irfan, was also present at the site.
Deadly Exposure to Poisonous Fumes
According to police sources, Jawed and Aqib reportedly descended deeper into the septic tank during a second round of cleaning around 2 am. It was at this point that they were overcome by poisonous fumes, leading to their tragic deaths due to suspected inhalation of toxic gases.
Survivor Raises Alarm
Irfan, who also entered the tank but began feeling dizzy shortly after, managed to climb out in time. Acting swiftly, he alerted authorities by calling the emergency helpline, potentially preventing further casualties.
“The victims were exposed to hazardous gases while cleaning the septic tank. One individual managed to escape and informed authorities,” police stated.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have initiated a probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including possible negligence and violations of safety norms. Further action will be taken based on the findings.
