Tehran: Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply as Iran signals a tougher stance over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of a global energy crisis. The move comes amid ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel, with threats, military posturing and diplomatic pressure intensifying across the region.
Iran is reportedly considering imposing tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery that handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and LNG supply, signalling a potential shift toward tighter control of the waterway.
He further claimed that US forces have significantly weakened Iran’s naval strength, pushing it “to the bottom half” of operational capacity, indicating escalating military engagement in the region.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have warned that US-linked oil facilities and military bases could be targeted if hostilities continue, especially after Israeli strikes on key Iranian energy infrastructure.
The nations emphasised that freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law and warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz pose a serious threat to global security.
“We are ready to act to ensure safe passage and stabilize energy markets,” the joint statement noted.
They also signaled readiness to release strategic oil reserves and support affected countries, indicating coordinated global efforts to prevent an energy crisis.
She stated that while the US aims to neutralize Iran’s missile and naval capabilities, Israel is primarily focused on targeting Iran’s leadership, reflecting differing priorities within the alliance.
Experts warn that any prolonged disruption could trigger a major global economic shock, making the current crisis one of the most critical geopolitical flashpoints in recent times.
