Hubballi: A shocking incident has sparked serious concerns over police procedures and the pressure faced by individuals during investigations after a farmer allegedly died by suicide, fearing interrogation in an atrocity case.
The deceased has been identified as Ningappa Angadi (48), a resident of Umachagi village in Hubballi taluk. According to local reports, the farmer took the extreme step after being repeatedly asked to appear for questioning by the police in connection with a dispute over access to a farm road.
Dispute Over Farm Road Turns Serious
The incident reportedly stems from a long-standing dispute over a road leading to agricultural land in Umachagi village. Tensions escalated recently when a confrontation allegedly broke out between Ningappa Angadi and several local Gram Panchayat members regarding the use of the road.
During the argument, villagers claim Ningappa was physically assaulted by Panchayat members, which further intensified the conflict. Following the altercation, a complaint was filed against him at the Hubballi Rural Police Station.
Police subsequently registered a case and began calling Ningappa for questioning regarding the matter.
Repeated Police Calls Created Fear
Sources in the village said that Ningappa had been receiving calls from the police over the past two to three days, asking him to appear at the police station for questioning.
The situation reportedly escalated when he was informed that an atrocity case had been registered in connection with the dispute, and he was instructed to come to the special police station for further inquiry.
Already distressed after the alleged assault, Ningappa reportedly became deeply frightened and mentally disturbed due to the possibility of legal complications and repeated summons from authorities.
“Police had been calling him repeatedly, asking him to come to the station. He was already upset after the attack, and the fear of the case seemed to trouble him deeply,” villagers said.
Farmer Found Hanging in His Field
According to villagers, on March 7, Ningappa left for his farmland as usual, but later hanged himself from a tree in the field, ending his life.
The incident has left the local community shocked and has raised serious questions about the sequence of events that pushed the farmer to take such an extreme step.
Villagers claim that Ningappa was first allegedly attacked during the dispute and later faced pressure due to the police case registered against him.
Questions Over Responsibility
The tragedy has triggered debate in the village and surrounding areas about who should be held responsible for the farmer’s death.
Many residents argue that authorities must exercise greater discretion and sensitivity while dealing with disputes and questioning individuals, especially in rural cases where legal procedures and accusations can cause severe psychological distress.
