Over 40 passengers were onboard as the Kalyana Karnataka RTC bus lost control, hit an electric pole and overturned near Kodal village; multiple injured, probe is underway

Chikkamagaluru: A bus belonging to the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) overturned after the driver reportedly lost control in Chikkamagaluru district. The incident occurred near Kodal village under Aldur police limits, leaving at least eight passengers injured and several others in shock.

According to initial reports, the bus was travelling from Kukunoor to Dharmasthala with more than 40 passengers onboard. The driver allegedly lost control at a turn, causing the vehicle to ram into an electric pole on the roadside. The impact was so severe that the bus overturned completely, creating a scene of chaos and panic.

Passengers Injured, Rushed to Hospital
Eight passengers sustained injuries in the accident, with some suffering head injuries and serious fractures to hands and legs. The injured were immediately shifted to the district hospital in Chikkamagaluru, where they are currently receiving treatment. Many of the passengers were locals, while others were en route to Dharmasthala.
“The bus suddenly lost control and overturned. People were screaming, and glass was shattered everywhere,” said an eyewitness, describing the horrifying moments.
Rescue Operation by Police and Locals
Local residents and police rushed to the accident site and carried out a swift rescue operation. Passengers trapped inside the overturned bus were pulled out and transported to the hospital. Traffic on the route was briefly disrupted before authorities cleared the road and restored normal movement.

Preliminary Probe Points to Driver Error
Initial investigation suggests that driver negligence or loss of control at a curve may have caused the accident. However, police are questioning the driver to determine the exact cause. A case has been registered, and further inquiry is underway.

Growing Concerns Over KSRTC Bus Safety
The incident has once again sparked debate over the safety of government buses in Karnataka. In recent months, several accidents involving KSRTC buses have been reported, with citizens blaming overspeeding, poor road conditions, and lack of maintenance.
Authorities are now facing increasing pressure to implement stricter safety measures, including regular driver training, vehicle inspections, and improved road infrastructure.
