Dubai International Airport suspension amid Israel-Iran tensions leaves Ballari tourists, senior citizens in distress; Karnataka government steps in for urgent evacuation
Ballari: A sudden suspension of operations at Dubai International Airport amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran has triggered panic among Indian travellers, with more than 150 Kannadigas reportedly stranded in Dubai. Among them are over 50 tourists from Ballari district, including MLA Bharat Reddy, who are currently facing severe hardship outside the airport premises.
According to sources, Bharat Reddy had travelled to Dubai with his family last week. On Saturday afternoon, he reached Dubai International Airport from Sharjah and was scheduled to board a return flight to India at 9 pm. However, airport authorities suspended operations citing security concerns linked to the intensifying geopolitical situation. Passengers were reportedly denied entry into the terminal following the shutdown.
A video message circulated widely on social media shows distressed tourists standing outside the airport without shelter.
"If we had entered earlier, we could have arranged accommodation. Now we are standing outside and cannot go anywhere. There are many elderly people with us. This is turning into a serious health hazard," a stranded tourist said.
Senior Citizens at Risk, Accommodation Costs Soar
The situation has become increasingly alarming as several members of the group are senior citizens, some aged above 70 and 80. With tour funds nearly exhausted, many are struggling to afford hotel rooms, where nightly tariffs have reportedly surged between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000. The absence of immediate shelter has heightened concerns over health and safety.
The stranded group has appealed to both the Karnataka government and the Centre for urgent intervention, requesting temporary accommodation, medical assistance, and expedited arrangements for their return to India.
Meanwhile, Ballari Rural MLA B. Nagendra has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take swift action to assist those in distress.
Over 150 Kannadigas Stranded, Says Home Minister
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated on Sunday that while the exact number is still being verified, preliminary information suggests that more than 150 Kannadigas are currently stranded in Dubai. This includes students from Chikkaballapur district.
He assured that state officials are actively coordinating efforts to establish contact with all affected individuals and facilitate their safe return. "We are making all necessary arrangements to ensure they are brought back safely without inconvenience," he said.
As geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt international travel, families back home remain anxious, awaiting concrete steps from authorities to resolve the crisis swiftly.
