Tragic crash near Binaga village in Karwar taluk leaves one child dead and three others seriously injured; police suspect container driver was under the influence of alcohol
Karwar: A tragic road accident in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka claimed the life of a five-year-old child after a container truck overturned onto a moving car near Binaga village in Karwar taluk. The devastating crash occurred on a ghat stretch, leaving a family’s holiday trip in ruins and raising serious concerns about road safety and drunk driving.
According to preliminary information from local police and eyewitnesses, the container vehicle suddenly lost balance and overturned onto a Kia car that was moving on the same route, crushing the vehicle and causing fatal injuries to the young child.
Child Dies on the Spot in Binaga Ghat Accident
Authorities confirmed that the five-year-old child died on the spot due to severe injuries caused by the impact. The accident took place near Binaga village, a ghat area known for sharp turns and heavy vehicle movement.
The family was reportedly travelling in a Kia car from Maharashtra, visiting coastal Karnataka on a tour trip when the tragedy struck. The sudden overturning of the container gave the passengers no time to escape.
Doctor Couple and Another Child Sustain Serious Injuries
In the same accident, a doctor couple and another child travelling in the car sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders rushed them to a nearby local hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Medical sources said the injured victims suffered multiple fractures and trauma, and their condition is being closely monitored.
Police Investigation Underway
Police officials reached the accident spot soon after receiving information and conducted an inspection of the scene. Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the crash.
Initial reports indicate that the container driver may have been under the influence of alcohol, which possibly led to the vehicle losing control on the ghat road.
“Preliminary findings suggest the container driver might have consumed alcohol before driving. We are conducting further investigation,” a police officer involved in the case said.
Officials are also examining CCTV footage, vehicle damage patterns, and driver statements to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident.
Rising Concerns Over Highway Safety
The incident has once again highlighted the growing concern over reckless driving and intoxicated driving on highways, especially in ghat sections of coastal Karnataka, where heavy container traffic frequently passes through narrow and curved roads.
Local residents have demanded stricter monitoring of heavy vehicles and strict action against drunk driving, emphasising that such negligence can result in irreversible tragedies.
Police said further legal action will be taken against the container driver after medical tests and investigation reports are completed.
