Anglo-Eastern Denies Claims as Probe Continues into Disappearance of Sarthak Mohapatra off Mauritius Coast

Bhubaneshwar: The family of missing Odisha merchant navy cadet Sarthak Mohapatra on Tuesday alleged non-cooperation by officials of the shipping company operating the vessel from which he disappeared mid-sea off the Mauritius coast on February 3.

Sarthak’s mother Rashmita Mohapatra and his uncle Santosh Sahu had travelled to Singapore after the vessel, EA Jersey, docked at a port there, in a bid to oversee efforts to trace him.

Addressing reporters at Bhubaneswar airport upon their return, Sahu claimed that although they were able to board the vessel with assistance from the Indian High Commission and the Directorate General of Shipping, company officials restricted their access during the visit.

Allegations of Restricted Access

Sahu alleged that around 15 company representatives were present on board and closely monitored their movements.

“Whenever I tried to speak to Sarthak’s colleagues or officers on board, company representatives interrupted and prevented me from asking questions,” he claimed.

He further stated that the family was allowed to visit only Sarthak’s personal cabin and was denied access to most other areas of the vessel. According to him, requests for an in-depth search of the ship did not receive a clear response, and officials allegedly sought signatures on certain documents during the visit.

The family also met the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore, where they were informed that a formal request for investigation is pending with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. The authority is currently examining the case and may involve the Singapore Police if necessary, Sahu said.

Company Refutes Allegations

Responding to the claims, Anglo-Eastern, which operates the vessel EA Jersey, denied any lack of cooperation.

In a statement, a company spokesperson said the cadet’s mother and uncle were “fully supported throughout” their visit, which was conducted in coordination with authorities and in compliance with regulatory and safety protocols.

The company maintained that it continues to cooperate with all authorities and the ongoing independent investigation, while remaining in contact with the cadet’s family.

Sarthak Mohapatra reportedly went missing mid-sea while the vessel was sailing off the Mauritius coast on February 3. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain under investigation.
