Blood tests confirm the toxic impact of contaminated milk in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh government links elevated urea and creatinine levels to deaths and hospitalizations

Rajamahendravaram: The Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday confirmed that the recent contaminated milk incident in Rajahmundry had a toxic physiological impact, with abnormally elevated blood urea and serum creatinine levels detected among affected individuals. Officials said the findings establish a direct medical link between the contaminated milk and the reported deaths and hospitalisations in East Godavari district.

According to preliminary medical and laboratory reports reviewed by the state health authorities, consumption of the contaminated milk triggered acute renal stress, reflected in sharply increased urea and creatinine values—key indicators of kidney function. The government said these biochemical abnormalities point to toxic exposure, rather than routine food poisoning.

Deaths and Hospitalisations Linked to Contaminated Milk
The incident came to light after four people died and nearly 15 others were hospitalised over the past few days following the alleged consumption of contaminated milk supplied in parts of Rajahmundry. Several of the hospitalised patients reportedly complained of severe vomiting, dehydration, weakness, and altered kidney parameters, prompting emergency medical intervention.
Health officials stated that all affected individuals were administered supportive treatment, while critically ill patients were placed under close observation due to the risk of acute kidney injury.
Government Confirms Toxic Impact
Senior officials from the state health department said the laboratory findings leave little doubt about the severity of the contamination.
“The elevated urea and creatinine levels clearly indicate a toxic impact on the human body. These abnormalities are consistent with exposure to harmful substances through contaminated milk,” a senior Andhra Pradesh health official said.
The government added that further toxicological analysis is underway to identify the exact nature of the contaminant, including whether industrial chemicals or adulterants were involved.

Investigation and Preventive Measures Underway
Authorities have initiated a multi-departmental probe, involving the food safety department, district administration, and forensic laboratories. Milk distribution points in the affected areas have been temporarily shut down, and samples from storage units, transport vehicles, and suppliers have been seized for testing.

Officials said strict action will be taken against those responsible if adulteration or negligence is established. Meanwhile, residents have been advised to avoid consuming unpackaged or locally supplied milk until further notice.

Public Health Alert in East Godavari
Medical experts have warned that exposure to toxic substances through food can lead to rapid organ damage, particularly affecting the kidneys and liver. The state government has instructed hospitals in East Godavari district to remain on alert and immediately report any new cases with similar symptoms.
