17-year-old student collapses at home while leaving for exam; incident sparks concern over exam stress and student health

Chikkodi: In a heartbreaking incident that has cast a shadow over the commencement of the Second Pre-University (PUC) examinations, a 17-year-old student died of a suspected heart attack on the very first day of the exams in Chikkodi. The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the town and surrounding villages, raising renewed concerns about student health and exam-related stress.

The deceased has been identified as Bhoomika Malangi, a native of Bambalawad village in Chikkodi taluk. She was pursuing her studies at a pre-university college located in Chinchani, near Chikkodi town.
According to information from the family, Bhoomika woke up early in the morning as part of her exam preparations and spent some time revising her lessons. After completing her bath, she was preparing to leave for the examination centre when she suddenly complained of severe chest pain and collapsed at home.
Family members immediately arranged for an ambulance and rushed her to a nearby hospital. However, despite their efforts, Bhoomika passed away on the way. Doctors are suspecting a cardiac arrest, though there is no confirmed information yet on whether she had any pre-existing medical condition.
Sources said Bhoomika experienced chest discomfort shortly after her bath and collapsed soon after. It has also emerged that she had studied continuously from around 3 am to 6 am, reportedly due to exam preparation.
Exam Pressure Under Scrutiny
The incident has once again brought the issue of academic pressure and student well-being into focus. Examinations such as SSLC and Second PUC are widely considered critical milestones that determine higher education opportunities. As a result, many students face intense stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivation during this period.

Medical experts have repeatedly warned that prolonged stress, lack of sleep, and anxiety can have serious health consequences, even among young and otherwise healthy individuals. In recent months, several cases of sudden cardiac arrest among young people have been reported, often without prior warning signs.

The untimely death of Bhoomika has left her family, relatives, classmates, teachers, and the entire village in deep grief.

Minister Satish Jarkiholi Condoles the Death
Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi expressed his condolences over the tragic incident through a Facebook post. Describing the news as deeply distressing, he said Bhoomika’s death at a time when she was preparing to face an important phase of life was an irreparable loss to her family and the community.
“The untimely demise of Second PUC student Bhoomika Malangi is heartbreaking. Life is far more valuable than any examination. Students must face stress with courage and share their concerns with parents, teachers, and friends,” Satish Jarkiholi said.
He further noted that the loss of such young dreams was extremely painful and urged students to prioritise mental strength and seek support during difficult times.
