Domestic Help Arrested for Serial Silver Theft Worth Rs. 35 Lakh; Jewellery Shop Fraud Accused Also Nabbed in Separate Case

Bengaluru: In a startling case that has shocked the city, a woman employed as a domestic help was arrested for allegedly stealing 12.5 kilograms of silver from the very house where she worked, reportedly to meet the escalating medical expenses of her cancer-stricken husband. The arrest was made by the Jivan Bhima Nagar police, who recovered silver and gold ornaments worth nearly Rs. 35 lakh. In a separate but equally serious incident, Bharatinagar police cracked a jewellery fraud case involving gold chains worth over ₹33 lakh.

Domestic Help Turns Thief Over Medical Crisis
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Chaitra, was working at the residence of a surgeon employed at a reputed hospital in Bengaluru. Investigators disclosed that Chaitra allegedly carried out the thefts gradually over a period of nearly one and a half years, carefully removing silver utensils one by one to avoid suspicion. In total, she is accused of stealing 12.5 kg of silver articles.

Police said Chaitra’s husband has been undergoing treatment for cancer, placing the family under severe financial strain. Investigators believe this pressure drove her to pawn the stolen silver and use the money for hospital expenses, while continuing to work in the same household to avoid raising alarms.

Festive Storage Became an Opportunity
The family reportedly stored silver vessels and puja items on the upper floor of the house, using them mainly during festivals. Taking advantage of this, the accused allegedly removed the items over time. After Diwali, Chaitra stopped reporting to work. When the family opened the storage bags ahead of Dasara, they discovered that several silver vessels and religious articles were missing, prompting them to approach the police.

Confession and Recovery
Based on the complaint, police questioned several domestic workers. During sustained interrogation, Chaitra allegedly confessed to the theft.
“The accused admitted to stealing silver items over a long period. We have recovered 12.5 kg of silver worth about Rs. 35 lakh and 7.5 grams of gold ornaments from her possession,” a senior police officer said.
Jewellery Fraud Case Uncovered
In another significant breakthrough, Bharatinagar police arrested Dharamveer Singh, a Rajasthan native, in a jewellery fraud case registered five months ago. Singh, who was working at Mahaveer Jewellery, allegedly cheated another gold shop by posing as the owner.

Police said that while the jewellery shop owner was away in Hyderabad, the accused used his name to obtain seven long gold chains, weighing 239 grams and valued at approximately Rs. 33 lakh, before fleeing to Rajasthan.

Five Months on the Run
The accused managed to evade police surveillance for nearly five months before being tracked down and arrested. The stolen gold chains have since been recovered.
“Both cases highlight how trust and access were misused. We have recovered all stolen valuables, and further investigation is ongoing,” police officials stated.
The twin cases have once again raised concerns over domestic thefts and insider fraud, prompting police to urge citizens and businesses to remain vigilant.
