Rainfall shortages and declining crop yields have pushed tur dal prices higher in Kalaburagi, increasing the burden on consumers during the festive season

Tur dal prices have risen sharply amid rainfall shortages and declining crop yields. Normal-quality tur dal has increased from ₹110 to ₹140 per kg in 15 days, while premium-quality tur dal has reached ₹160 per kg.

Kalaburagi: Tur dal prices have surged in Kalaburagi district amid rainfall shortages and declining agricultural output, putting additional pressure on consumers during the festive season. Normal-quality tur dal has increased by ₹30 per kg in the past 15 days, while premium-quality tur dal has also become more expensive.

The price rise has been attributed to inadequate rainfall, drought conditions and reduced crop yields. There are concerns that prices could increase further in the coming days.

Tur Dal Prices in Kalaburagi Rise Sharply

On October 1, normal-quality tur dal was priced at ₹110 per kg. The price has since increased to ₹140 per kg, marking a ₹30 rise in just 15 days.

Premium-quality tur dal, which cost ₹146 per kg on October 1, has increased to ₹160 per kg. The rise has added to household expenses during the festive season.

Wholesale prices have also climbed. Last month, tur dal was priced between ₹7,100 and ₹9,500 per quintal. The latest reported range is ₹8,500 to ₹10,000 per quintal, representing an increase of up to ₹1,500 per quintal at the upper end of the reported range.

Kalaburagi Tur Dal Crop Faces Rainfall Shortage Concerns

Kalaburagi district had set a target of sowing crops across 6.30 lakh hectares during the monsoon season. However, inadequate rainfall limited sowing to 5.34 lakh hectares, according to the supplied figures.

Of the area sown, crops across 4.04 lakh hectares were reportedly damaged due to drought conditions. The resulting decline in agricultural output has raised concerns about supply and prices.

Farmer leaders have urged the central and Karnataka governments to assist farmers affected by drought and crop losses.
