Indi MLA Yashvantharayagouda Patil has resigned from his Assembly seat after Indi and Chadchan were excluded from the drought-hit list

Congress MLA Yashvantharayagouda Patil has resigned from the Karnataka Assembly over the exclusion of Indi and Chadchan taluks from the drought-affected list.

Bengaluru: Congress MLA Yashvantharayagouda Patil, who represents the Indi Assembly constituency in Vijayapura district, has submitted his resignation from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly over the exclusion of Indi and Chadchan taluks from the state’s drought-affected list.

Patil submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker on Wednesday, September 23, according to multiple reports. He had also informed Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar about his decision.

The MLA said repeated requests to declare Indi and Chadchan drought-affected had not received the response he expected.

Yashvantharayagouda Patil Raises Drought Concerns

In his resignation letter, Patil referred to difficulties faced by farmers and residents in his constituency following inadequate rainfall during the 2026-27 season.

According to the letter, farmers initially received rainfall and proceeded with sowing after purchasing seeds and fertilisers, including by borrowing money. However, insufficient rainfall later affected the crops, while concerns over drinking water and fodder were also raised.

Patil said he had submitted a representation to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on August 28 seeking drought-hit status for Indi and Chadchan.

Reports said 11 of Vijayapura district’s 13 taluks had been included in the drought-affected list, leaving Indi and Chadchan outside the declaration. Across Karnataka, the number of declared drought-affected taluks had reached 188 in the latest reports.

MLA Says Constituency Expectations Not Addressed

Patil said he had made several appeals regarding the issue but felt unable to adequately respond to the expectations and concerns of people in his constituency.

He also expressed dissatisfaction with the prevailing political environment, saying that pressure and influential groups receive greater attention while people who adopt a softer approach struggle to have their demands addressed. These remarks were part of his explanation for the resignation and represent Patil’s stated position.

The latest resignation follows an earlier episode in August 2026, when Patil had submitted his resignation amid dissatisfaction over his exclusion from the Karnataka Cabinet expansion. He later withdrew that resignation following discussions with senior Congress leaders.
