Nandan Yadav and another accused were injured in a police encounter and taken into custody after a viral video of the alleged assault on two minors triggered widespread outrage

Bihar Police arrested alleged prime accused Nandan Yadav after he was injured in a police encounter in Jamui. Another accused, Hareram Yadav, was also injured and taken into custody as the investigation continues.

Jamui: Bihar Police have arrested Nandan Yadav, identified as a prime accused in the Jamui molestation case, after he was injured in a police encounter on Tuesday. Yadav sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the operation. Another absconding accused, Hareram Yadav, was also injured in the leg and taken into custody, according to reports.

The arrests come days after videos of the alleged incident involving two minor students circulated widely on social media, prompting public outrage and police action. The incident took place on the evening of September 19 in Jamui.

Jamui Molestation Case Follows Viral Video Of Alleged Assault

According to police reports, a minor girl and her male friend were returning after coaching classes when a group of youths allegedly stopped them along the Jamui-Lakhisarai route.

The teenagers were allegedly surrounded and subjected to harassment and physical assault. Videos that later surfaced online showed the boy being slapped while the girl was seen pleading with the group to let them go. Police subsequently identified several people allegedly involved in the incident.

The circulation of the footage led to widespread public criticism and prompted the police to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those allegedly involved.

Police Register Case Under POCSO Act

Following the circulation of the videos, Jamui Police took cognisance of the incident and registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police also constituted a Special Investigation Team to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects. Earlier reports said three people had been arrested and several others were being traced in connection with the case.

Authorities have also initiated action against social media accounts that circulated footage that could reveal the identity of the minor victim.

Rahul Gandhi Condemns Jamui Incident

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the incident in a post on X, criticising what he described as patriarchal attitudes behind the alleged attack.

Gandhi questioned the circumstances that allowed the accused to interfere with the girl's autonomy and called for accountability in the case.

The incident has also drawn wider political attention, while the police investigation into the alleged assault and the circumstances surrounding Tuesday's encounter remains underway.
