Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K. N. Ramesh sets a September 10 deadline to install GPS tracking on all garbage collection auto tippers in Bommanahalli

Bengaluru South City Corporation will expand GPS tracking to 208 garbage collection auto tippers in Bommanahalli, while night waste collection and stricter action against roadside dumping aim to reduce garbage black spots.

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru South City Corporation has set September 10 as the deadline for installing GPS tracking systems on all garbage collection auto tippers in the Bommanahalli zone, following the successful implementation of a pilot project.

Commissioner K. N. Ramesh said the pilot project, implemented under a CSR initiative of Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd. using “Brain Above” technology, has helped reduce garbage black spots.

GPS Tracking Pilot Reduces Garbage Black Spots

GPS tracking was installed on 36 garbage collection auto tippers at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in HSR Layout on August 13.

According to the Corporation, local residents and NGOs have appreciated the considerable reduction in black spots over the past three weeks, which officials attributed to daily door-to-door waste collection.

Following the pilot's results, the Commissioner directed officials to mandatorily install GPS tracking on all 208 garbage collection auto tippers in the Bommanahalli zone by September 10.

Full-scale tracking across the Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency is scheduled to begin from September 11.

Public to Track Garbage Autos Through Brain Above App

Once GPS installation and route mapping are completed, residents will be able to track the movement of garbage collection autos assigned to their streets through the Brain Above app.

The tracking system will cover all nine wards of the Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency, including HSR Layout, Hongasandra and Mangammanapalya.

In narrow lanes where garbage collection vehicles cannot enter, the autos will halt at nearby locations for 10 minutes. Collection teams will then collect household waste after alerting residents by blowing whistles.

Night Garbage Collection Planned at Black Spots

The Commissioner directed contractors to deploy garbage collection auto tippers during the night in and around areas identified as high-density garbage black spots.

Officials were also instructed to create awareness among street vendors through marshals, including vendors operating around Meenakshi Mall and other commercial areas.

Vendors will be encouraged to hand over waste to garbage collection autos free of cost instead of dumping it along roadsides.

Fines Planned for Roadside Garbage Dumping

The Commissioner directed officials to conduct awareness campaigns among shopkeepers in commercial areas for two to three days and encourage them to hand over waste to night-shift garbage collection autos.

If roadside dumping continues after the awareness period, a nominal fine will initially be imposed. Repeated violations could attract heavier fines and vehicle seizure, according to the directions issued at the meeting.

Pourakarmikas to Undertake Gang Work

After completing door-to-door garbage collection, pourakarmikas and vehicle drivers will be required to participate in “gang work” in teams of 10.

The teams will work five days a week until 2:00 PM to clear identified garbage black spots, the Commissioner directed.

Salaries to Be Paid on Time

Commissioner K. N. Ramesh also instructed officials to ensure timely payment of salaries to pourakarmikas, auto drivers and contract staff without disruptions.

He said contractor bills would be approved strictly on the basis of GPS tracking data.

The Commissioner appealed to citizens and traders not to dump garbage in public places and to cooperate with the Corporation by handing over waste only to designated garbage collection vehicles.

DGM Manuja, representatives from NGOs Let’s Be The Change, Saahas and HSR Citizen Forum, along with garbage collection contractors, were present on the occasion.
