Dharwad: A person from Halligeri village in Dharwad taluk who had left her hometown 13 years ago and later joined the transgender community in Bengaluru was killed in the city’s Majestic area, leaving the family shocked after learning about her life and identity.
Originally known as Arun, she moved to Bengaluru about 13 years ago and became part of the transgender community. She later changed her name to Devi.
According to the information available to the family, Devi had been working in a soap company in Bengaluru. She also reportedly earned money by begging in the Majestic area and used to send a portion of her earnings to her mother, Kashavva, in Halligeri.
However, the family had believed that Arun was continuing to work at a soap company in Bengaluru and was unaware that she had joined the transgender community and was living as Devi.
Devi killed in Bengaluru’s Majestic area
A few days ago, Devi was reportedly stabbed to death in the Majestic area by Gauskar Gautam over Rs 200.
The incident came as a shock to Devi’s family in Halligeri. Her relatives were reportedly unaware that Arun had become Devi and was living as part of the transgender community in Bengaluru.
The family came to know about her transgender identity only after her death. The circumstances surrounding the killing have left the family dealing with the loss while also learning about a part of Devi’s life that had remained unknown to them.
Family unaware of Devi’s life in Bengaluru
When Devi returned to her village, she reportedly wore trousers and a T-shirt and behaved in a manner that did not reveal her identity as a transgender woman to people in the village.
She also reportedly wore a cap in Bengaluru to hide her hair while begging in the city.
While Devi had been living as a member of the transgender community in Bengaluru, her family continued to believe that she was working at a soap company.
Her mother, Kashavva, reportedly remained unaware of her daughter’s life in Bengaluru until the circumstances following her death revealed her transgender identity.
Devi had sent Rs 13,000 to her mother
About 15 days before her death, Devi had deposited Rs 13,000 into her mother’s bank account.
Her mother reportedly believed that the money had been sent by her son, who she understood was working in Bengaluru.
The family later came to know that Arun had transitioned and was living as Devi after joining the transgender community in Bengaluru.
The information reportedly came as a shock to the family, which had remained unaware of Devi’s identity and life in the city.
Transgender community performs last rites
After learning about Devi’s death, her mother travelled to Bengaluru along with relatives. Members of the transgender community reportedly performed Devi’s last rites according to their traditions.
The family, which had known Arun as their son who had left Halligeri years earlier, was confronted with the circumstances of Devi’s life only after her death.
Devi’s journey from Halligeri to Bengaluru, her association with the transgender community and her eventual death in Majestic have left her family grieving while coming to terms with a life they had not fully known.
