Search and rescue operations are underway in Mon district after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried several houses and caused flash floods

Kohima: At least eight people are feared dead after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck Mon town in Nagaland on Sunday morning, officials said. Rescue teams have so far recovered four bodies, while search operations are continuing amid difficult conditions caused by flash floods and continuous water flow in the affected area.
The landslide occurred at around 6.30 am in Mon district, where heavy rain also triggered flash floods, damaging houses and disrupting normal life.
Nagaland Landslide Search Operations Continue
Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak said eight people are feared to have lost their lives in the incident.
"Eight people are feared dead. We have been able to retrieve four bodies from the debris and massive search and rescue operations are going on in the area," Konyak said.
Officials said the landslide swept away several houses, raising concerns that more people could still be trapped beneath the debris.
A large volume of water continues to flow through the affected area, making rescue operations more challenging.
Rescue Teams Deployed in Mon District
Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, the Indian Army, and local volunteers have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations.
Authorities are using available resources to clear debris and locate missing persons as adverse weather conditions continue to hamper the operation.
Officials said continuous rainfall and flash floods are slowing rescue efforts in the affected area.
Nagaland Government Announces Relief Measures
The Nagaland government expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced an ex gratia of ₹4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹74,000 for every injured person.
The state government also said affected families will receive relief assistance, including:
- Food supplies
- Temporary shelter
- Essential household items
- Other eligible relief support
Heavy Rain Impacts Multiple Districts
The state government said it is closely monitoring the evolving weather situation as heavy rainfall continues to affect several districts.
Apart from Mon district, the Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district and other areas have reported landslides, flash floods, road blockages, and damage to public infrastructure and private property.
Authorities have directed all concerned departments to remain on high alert and advised residents to avoid landslide-prone slopes, riverbanks, and vulnerable areas until weather conditions improve.
The government has urged the public to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall continues across several parts of Nagaland.
Rescue operations are continuing, and officials are expected to release updated casualty figures after search teams complete operations at the landslide site.
