A woman and two children were killed after a retaining wall collapsed onto rented houses in Mangaluru's Kankanady area amid heavy monsoon rainfall
Heavy monsoon rains triggered a tragic wall collapse in Mangaluru's Kankanady area early Wednesday, leaving three people dead and three others injured. The retaining wall behind a row of rented houses gave way before dawn, crushing portions of the residential structures. Police and emergency teams rushed to the spot, rescued the survivors and launched an investigation into the incident.
Mangaluru: Three people, including two children, lost their lives after a retaining wall collapsed onto a cluster of rented houses following incessant rainfall in Mangaluru's Kankanady area during the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident occurred between 4.45 am and 5 am in the Garodi locality, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kankanady Police Station. The collapse damaged multiple houses situated below the retaining wall, trapping residents beneath the debris.
The deceased include one woman and two girls, while a man and two children were rescued from the rubble and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition is being monitored.
"The retaining wall collapsed during the early morning hours after continuous heavy rainfall, leaving three people dead and several others injured."
Mangaluru Wall Collapse Damages Four Rented Houses
According to the police, four families were living in rented houses below the retaining wall. The collapse caused the rear portions of all four houses to cave in, while two of the houses suffered extensive damage and bore the brunt of the impact.
Addressing reporters at the scene, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said four families were living in the rented houses beneath the compound wall.
"Four families were residing in rented houses just below the compound wall. The rear walls of all four houses collapsed, while two families were directly affected," the Police Commissioner said.
Emergency personnel, police officials and local residents jointly carried out rescue operations to pull survivors from the debris.
Neighbours Recount Moments of the Mangaluru Rain Tragedy
Residents living nearby described the terrifying moments when the retaining wall collapsed.
One neighbour said they woke up after hearing a loud crashing sound at around 4 am and immediately rushed outside to help.
"The tragedy occurred around 4 am. We rushed to the spot after hearing a loud noise. By the time we reached, the roof had already collapsed. We immediately informed the police. Four tenant families have been affected by this tragedy," the neighbour said.
The eyewitness added that despite immediate efforts by local residents, the collapse had caused severe damage before help could arrive.
Mangaluru Heavy Rain Suspected Behind Kankanady Wall Collapse
Preliminary findings indicate that continuous heavy rainfall may have weakened the retaining wall, leading to its collapse. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the incident.
Police and civic authorities have begun an investigation to determine whether structural weaknesses, inadequate drainage or prolonged water pressure contributed to the collapse.
Experts are also expected to inspect nearby retaining walls and vulnerable residential structures as monsoon conditions continue across coastal Karnataka.
Mangaluru Wall Collapse: Rescue Operations and Investigation Continue
Rescue teams completed search operations after ensuring no additional residents remained trapped beneath the debris. The bodies of the deceased have been shifted for post-mortem examination, while the injured continue to receive treatment at the hospital.
Authorities have assured that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to establish responsibility and assess whether preventive measures could have averted the tragedy.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by ageing retaining walls and unstable structures during the monsoon season, particularly in densely populated residential areas built on uneven terrain.
Similar Rain-Related Wall Collapse Reported Last Year in Mangaluru
The latest tragedy has also revived concerns over structural safety during the southwest monsoon. In 2024, a separate rain-triggered wall collapse in another part of Mangaluru claimed multiple lives, while another retaining wall collapse near Jokatte resulted in the death of a teenager.
These recurring incidents have prompted renewed calls for regular structural safety audits, timely maintenance of retaining walls and strict monitoring of vulnerable residential areas before and during the monsoon season.
