Heavy rainfall across Karnataka has revived major rivers, triggered weather alerts, and raised concerns over flooding in vulnerable regions

Karnataka is witnessing widespread rainfall due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and a trough over the Arabian Sea. The downpour has revived major rivers across Belagavi district, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue an orange alert for 11 districts and a yellow alert for eight others. At the same time, authorities have cautioned residents about possible flooding, strong winds, and rough sea conditions.

Bengaluru: Continuous heavy rainfall across Karnataka's Western Ghats over the past four days has dramatically transformed the state's water scenario, breathing new life into rivers and reservoirs that had nearly dried up during recent weeks. While the rains have significantly improved water availability in several regions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert about the possibility of further heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds across multiple districts.

The revival of rivers in Belagavi district has emerged as one of the most significant developments following the sustained rainfall. Rivers that were nearly dry just days ago are now flowing with substantial water levels, offering relief to farmers and water-dependent communities while also raising concerns about flooding if the rainfall continues.

Karnataka Rainfall Revives Malaprabha River and Reservoirs

The Malaprabha River, which had almost dried up merely four days ago, is now witnessing an inflow estimated between 1,500 and 2,000 cusecs following persistent rainfall in the Western Ghats and Khanapura taluk. The increased inflow has significantly replenished the river before it merges into the Navilutirtha Reservoir near Savadatti.

The reservoir, which had witnessed critically low water levels earlier, has started receiving a steady inflow, bringing welcome relief to irrigation projects and nearby agricultural communities dependent on the reservoir.

The rapid turnaround highlights the impact of continuous monsoon activity across Karnataka's catchment areas.

Heavy Rainfall Rejuvenates Seven Major Rivers in Belagavi District

The impact of the rainfall extends beyond the Malaprabha River. Several other major rivers flowing through Belagavi district have also witnessed a remarkable rise in water levels within a short span of four days.

Among the rivers flowing with renewed strength are:

  • Malaprabha
  • Ghataprabha
  • Krishna
  • Dood Ganga
  • Ved Ganga
  • Along with other major river systems in the district.

The sudden increase in river discharge has significantly improved the regional water situation after weeks of below-normal flow.

However, local authorities and residents remain cautious, as continuous heavy rainfall may result in overflowing rivers, inundation of low-lying agricultural lands, and localized flooding in vulnerable villages.

"The rivers have recovered rapidly due to sustained rainfall, but continued heavy showers could increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas."

Orange Alert Issued for 11 Karnataka Districts Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for 11 districts after forecasting widespread heavy rainfall across Karnataka.

The districts under Orange Alert include:

  • Uttara Kannada
  • Udupi
  • Dakshina Kannada
  • Belagavi
  • Shivamogga
  • Chikkamagaluru
  • Hassan
  • Kodagu
  • Dharwad
  • Vijayapura
  • Raichur

According to the Weather Department, these districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall throughout the day, increasing the likelihood of waterlogging, overflowing streams, and localized flooding.

Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal combined with the formation of a trough over the Arabian Sea, both of which are enhancing moisture inflow into Karnataka.

Yellow Alert Declared for Eight Karnataka Districts

In addition to the Orange Alert, the IMD has placed eight districts under a Yellow Alert, indicating moderate to heavy rainfall.

The districts are:

  1. Mysuru
  2. Mandya
  3. Tumakuru
  4. Haveri
  5. Davanagere
  6. Gadag
  7. Ballari
  8. Chikkaballapur

Authorities have advised residents in these districts to remain vigilant, particularly in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and localized flooding.

Strong Winds and Rough Sea Conditions Trigger Fishermen Warning in Karnataka

Apart from heavy rainfall, the Weather Department has forecast strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph, particularly across Karnataka's coastal districts.

In view of rough sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea until weather conditions improve.

Officials have warned that high waves and gusty winds could make fishing activities hazardous over the coming days.

"People living in districts under weather alerts should closely follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall."

Moderate Rain Expected in Bengaluru

While coastal and Malnad districts are expected to receive intense rainfall, Bengaluru is likely to experience moderate rain during the day.

Weather experts believe intermittent showers will continue across the city, helping maintain pleasant temperatures while potentially causing traffic congestion during peak hours.

Authorities have advised commuters to plan travel accordingly as rainfall intensity may vary across different parts of the city.

Authorities Urge Public to Remain Vigilant in Karnataka

Disaster management officials and the Weather Department have urged residents across Karnataka, particularly those living in districts under Orange and Yellow Alerts, to remain cautious and regularly monitor official weather updates.

With rivers already witnessing a sharp rise in water levels and reservoirs beginning to refill, officials continue to monitor the evolving monsoon situation closely to prevent any untoward incidents.

Residents in flood-prone regions have been advised to avoid riverbanks, remain alert for changing weather conditions, and cooperate with local authorities if precautionary measures become necessary.
