Urban demand, expanding poultry hubs and changing food habits have made Southern Karnataka the state's largest consumer of chicken and eggs

Karnataka's poultry industry is witnessing sustained growth, driven by rising chicken and egg consumption in Bengaluru and Southern Karnataka. Experts attribute the trend to urbanisation, higher disposable incomes, expanding poultry production, evolving dietary preferences and growing health awareness, while temporary supply disruptions continue to influence market prices.

NewsFlash Desk: Southern Karnataka, led by Bengaluru and its surrounding districts, has emerged as the state's largest market for chicken and eggs, reflecting changing food preferences, rapid urbanisation and a well-developed poultry ecosystem. Industry experts say the region's strong demand is supported by high purchasing power, a dense network of poultry farms and increasing awareness of protein-rich diets.

The growing consumption has also positioned Karnataka among the country's major poultry markets, with districts around Bengaluru playing a critical role in supplying chicken and eggs to urban consumers. While recent price increases have affected households and businesses, industry observers say the long-term outlook for the sector remains positive as production continues to expand.

Karnataka Chicken and Egg Consumption Highest in Southern Region

Industry stakeholders note that Southern Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru, records the highest consumption of chicken and eggs in the state.

The region's rapidly expanding urban population, rising incomes and changing lifestyles have significantly increased demand for poultry products in homes, restaurants, hotels and institutional kitchens. Bengaluru's vibrant food industry, which includes restaurants, cafés, cloud kitchens and quick-service outlets, consumes large quantities of chicken and eggs every day, creating steady demand throughout the year.

Experts say increasing awareness about balanced diets and affordable protein sources has further strengthened poultry consumption among working professionals, students and families.

"Urbanisation, changing food habits and higher disposable incomes have made Southern Karnataka the state's largest poultry consumption market," industry observers say.

Bengaluru and Nearby Districts Form Karnataka's Poultry Hub

The poultry industry in Karnataka is largely concentrated around Bengaluru and neighbouring districts, creating one of South India's strongest poultry production belts.

Major broiler-producing districts include:

  • Bengaluru Urban
  • Bengaluru Rural
  • Tumakuru
  • Kolar
  • Chikkaballapur

These districts benefit from well-established poultry infrastructure, modern commercial farms and efficient transportation networks that allow fresh poultry products to reach urban markets quickly.

The close proximity between production centres and consumers also helps reduce logistics costs, making broiler chicken one of the most affordable sources of animal protein available in the region.

Egg Production Strong in Central and Northern Karnataka

While Southern Karnataka dominates poultry consumption, several districts in central and northern Karnataka contribute significantly to egg production.

Major egg-producing districts include:

  • Ballari
  • Chitradurga
  • Davanagere
  • Raichur
  • Koppal

These production centres play a crucial role in supplying eggs to Bengaluru and other major urban markets across Karnataka, helping maintain year-round availability despite fluctuations in demand.

Changing Food Habits Fuel Poultry Market Expansion

Industry experts attribute the sustained increase in poultry consumption to multiple socio-economic factors.

Growing urbanisation has encouraged more families to dine outside their homes, increasing demand from hotels, restaurants and catering businesses. At the same time, higher purchasing power has enabled consumers to include chicken and eggs more frequently in their daily diets.

Nutrition awareness has also played a significant role. Health professionals widely recognise eggs and chicken as affordable, protein-rich foods, making them increasingly popular among fitness enthusiasts, young professionals and students seeking balanced diets.

"Chicken and eggs have become preferred protein choices because they are widely available, comparatively affordable and suitable for diverse dietary preferences," market analysts note.

Weather and Supply Chains Influence Poultry Prices

Although Karnataka has maintained relatively favourable poultry production conditions in recent months, industry representatives say market prices are also influenced by interstate supply dynamics.

Temporary supply disruptions in neighbouring poultry-producing states, including Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, have affected overall availability in southern markets. Extreme summer temperatures and seasonal challenges reportedly impacted poultry production in some regions, contributing to tighter supplies and higher wholesale prices.

As a result, retail prices for chicken and eggs have remained elevated despite stable production in several parts of Karnataka.

Industry experts believe that the arrival of the southwest monsoon is expected to improve production conditions and gradually stabilise supplies across South India.

Broiler Chicken Remains More Affordable Than Country Chicken

The poultry market continues to witness a significant price difference between commercial broiler chicken and traditional country (naati) chicken.

Broiler chicken is generally produced through large-scale commercial farming with shorter production cycles, enabling lower retail prices.

Country chicken, by comparison, requires longer rearing periods, lower stocking density and higher production costs, resulting in substantially higher market prices.

This pricing gap continues to make broiler chicken the preferred choice for most households, restaurants and institutional buyers.

Poultry Industry Expected to Stabilise as Supply Improves

Market participants believe poultry prices are likely to moderate gradually as production recovers and interstate supplies improve following the active monsoon season.

However, they caution that future price movements will continue to depend on weather conditions, poultry health, transportation logistics and consumer demand.

Despite short-term price fluctuations, industry experts remain optimistic that Karnataka's poultry sector will continue to expand, supported by robust urban demand and a strong production network across the state.

"A balanced supply chain and stable production will be key to ensuring affordable poultry products for consumers while sustaining industry growth."
