Belagavi: A heartbreaking accident claimed the life of a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Kodani village of Nippani taluk, Belagavi district, after a saree used as a makeshift swing accidentally tightened around her neck while she was playing at home.
The victim, identified as Shubhra Yuvraj Raut-Patil (14), was a Class 8 student studying at Sankpal High School. The tragic incident has left residents of Kodani village deeply saddened, with the local community mourning the untimely loss of the young student.
Belagavi Swing Accident Happened During School Holiday
According to preliminary information, schools across the district had remained closed on Wednesday following heavy rainfall. As a result, Shubhra stayed home with her two sisters.
Her mother had gone to work in the fields, while her father had left for work elsewhere. Her grandfather was at home, and her grandmother was away on a pilgrimage to Pandharpur.
Later in the evening, Shubhra was reportedly relaxing and playing on a makeshift swing made using a saree inside the house.
Saree Swing Twisted Around Girl's Neck
During play, the swing reportedly twisted suddenly, causing a portion of the saree to tighten around the girl's neck.
As her feet were not touching the ground, she was unable to free herself, and the saree tightened further around her neck.
The incident occurred within moments after the makeshift swing became twisted, leaving the child unable to escape.
Her grandfather immediately raised an alarm after noticing what had happened.
Neighbours Rushed the Girl to Hospital
Hearing the cries for help, neighbours rushed to the house and immediately shifted Shubhra to a private hospital in Nippani.
Despite their efforts, doctors declared the teenager dead before treatment could begin. The sudden loss has plunged the grieving family and the entire village into mourning.
Police Begin Investigation Into Tragic Incident
Officials from the Nippani Rural Police Station and the Department of Women and Child Development visited the spot to inspect the scene.
Police completed the initial inquiry, and the process of registering a case continued late into the night. The body was later shifted to the Government Mahatma Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Authorities are treating the incident as an accidental death, and further legal formalities are underway.
