Rising military tensions trigger global concern as Strait of Hormuz faces disruption and regional powers call for restraint

The Middle East witnessed a sharp escalation in tensions on June 11 as fresh US strikes targeted locations in Iran, prompting security concerns across the Gulf region. Iran signalled potential restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, while countries including Turkey and Russia urged both Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations. The developments have raised fears over regional stability, maritime trade, and global energy security.

New Delhi/Tehran: The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified on Thursday following fresh American strikes inside Iran, sparking diplomatic reactions, military activity, and growing concerns over maritime security in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Amid the escalating crisis, Indian authorities confirmed the deaths of three Indian seafarers who had earlier been reported missing following an incident aboard the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello. The development added a tragic dimension to the unfolding regional tensions.

Three Indian Seafarers Confirmed Dead

Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed that the three missing Indian crew members had been located and identified.

Describing the deaths as a significant loss to India's maritime sector, Sonowal said the government had directed officials to expedite the repatriation of surviving crew members and ensure the swift return of the deceased sailors' bodies to India for final rites.

“This is a profound loss for India’s maritime community. Necessary arrangements are being made for the families and the return of the crew,” the minister said.

Iran Signals Restrictions in Strait of Hormuz

The situation in the Persian Gulf became increasingly tense after Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority advised vessels holding transit permits through the Strait of Hormuz to wait for further instructions.

According to the authority, maritime traffic could face severe restrictions amid the ongoing confrontation with US forces. The statement raised fresh concerns over one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.

The Strait of Hormuz handles a substantial portion of global oil and gas shipments, making any disruption a matter of international economic concern.

“Permit holders should remain patient and await further notice,” the authority stated.

Fresh US Strikes and Military Activity Reported

Iranian emergency authorities reported that five people were injured in the latest US strikes conducted on Thursday. Emergency Medical Services chief Jafar Miadfar said three individuals were injured in Tehran while two others were wounded in Hormozgan Province.

All five reportedly received treatment and were discharged from medical facilities.

Meanwhile, videos circulating from Bandar Abbas showed fighter jets operating in the area as military activity intensified across southern Iran. Separate footage also appeared to show a projectile launch near the Aznab military base in Abhar, marking the second reported launch from the location within three days.

Russia and Turkey Call for Restraint

As tensions mounted, international diplomatic efforts intensified.

The Kremlin urged both Iran and the United States to exercise restraint and continue negotiations rather than pursue further military escalation.

Similarly, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on both sides to halt attacks and resume dialogue. Speaking in Sofia, Fidan said Ankara was maintaining communication with Washington, Tehran, and mediator Pakistan in an effort to support a peaceful resolution.

“The priority should be returning to negotiations and preventing a wider regional conflict,” Fidan said.

Kuwait Condemns Iranian Actions

Kuwait's Foreign Ministry on Thursday condemned what it described as repeated Iranian attacks targeting the country.

In an official statement, the ministry said such actions violated Kuwaiti sovereignty, international law, and the principles of the United Nations Charter. Kuwait also asserted its right to take all necessary measures to protect its national security and critical infrastructure.

Global Attention Turns to Gulf Stability

The latest developments have intensified concerns over the possibility of a broader regional conflict involving key Gulf states and international powers. With the Strait of Hormuz under heightened scrutiny and diplomatic channels under pressure, global markets and maritime operators are closely monitoring the situation.

Analysts warn that any prolonged disruption to shipping routes or escalation in military operations could have far-reaching consequences for energy supplies, international trade, and geopolitical stability.
