The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for several coastal and Malnad districts of Karnataka, forecasting heavy rainfall until July 2
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for parts of Karnataka's coastal and Malnad regions, warning of heavy rainfall over the next few days. Districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Uttara Kannada are expected to receive widespread rain until July 2, while Gokarna recorded the highest rainfall in the state during the past 24 hours.
Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for several districts in Karnataka's coastal and Malnad regions, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. The alert will remain in effect until July 2, with authorities advising residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious amid the possibility of intense showers.
According to the weather department, the monsoon is expected to strengthen over Karnataka's western regions, bringing widespread rainfall to the Western Ghats and coastal belt.
Karnataka Rain Alert for Coastal and Malnad Districts
The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall on July 1 in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Uttara Kannada.
On June 30, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru are expected to receive widespread rainfall, while heavy showers are likely to continue across Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada on July 2.
The Orange Alert indicates the likelihood of adverse weather conditions and calls for heightened preparedness in areas vulnerable to waterlogging, landslides and traffic disruptions.

Monsoon Activity Remained Weak Across Karnataka
Despite the forecast for heavy rainfall in the coming days, the southwest monsoon remained relatively weak across Karnataka during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday.
The weather department said rainfall was confined to isolated locations across the coastal, north interior and south interior regions of the state.
Most districts witnessed light to moderate showers, while widespread rainfall activity was limited during the reporting period.
Gokarna Records Highest Rainfall in Karnataka
Among the recorded rainfall figures, Gokarna received the highest rainfall in the state with 6 centimetres.
It was followed by Honnavar and Karwar, each recording 5 centimetres of rainfall.
Other notable rainfall totals included:
- Kundapur: 4 cm
- Ankola: 3 cm
- Tiptur: 3 cm
These locations experienced intermittent moderate to heavy showers as monsoon activity gradually strengthened along Karnataka's western coastline.
"Gokarna recorded the state's highest rainfall at 6 cm during the 24-hour observation period."
Raichur, Hottest Place in Karnataka
While coastal districts experienced rainfall, Raichur recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 37 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.
The sharp contrast between high temperatures in northern Karnataka and heavy rainfall expected along the coast reflects the uneven progression of the southwest monsoon across different parts of the state.
Authorities Advise Caution During Heavy Rainfall
With heavy rainfall expected over the next few days, authorities have advised residents, tourists and motorists in the affected districts to remain alert, particularly in low-lying areas and regions prone to landslides.
People travelling through the Western Ghats and coastal highways have also been urged to monitor weather updates and follow official advisories issued by local administrations.
The IMD will continue monitoring the evolving weather system and issue further updates as monsoon activity intensifies across Karnataka.
