Elderly woman buried alive after rain-soaked house roof caves in near Goureeshwara Temple in Vijayapura district

Vijayapura: A tragic incident was reported from Vijayapura district after a 55-year-old woman died when the roof of her old house suddenly collapsed in Nidagundi town following recent heavy rainfall.

The deceased has been identified as Mahadevi, who was reportedly buried alive under the debris after the roof of the rain-damaged house caved in during the late-night hours near the Goureeshwara Temple area.

According to local reports, continuous rainfall over the past few days had severely weakened the structure of the old house, leading to the collapse.

The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Nidagundi Police Station.

Officials said the roof of the house suddenly collapsed while Mahadevi was inside the building. She became trapped beneath the debris and died on the spot before rescue efforts could save her.

Her husband, identified as Shivanand, reportedly escaped unhurt as he was sleeping outside the house at the time of the incident.

“The roof of the old rain-soaked house collapsed during the night, resulting in the woman being buried under the debris,” officials said.

Police and Revenue Officials Visit Accident Site

Following the incident, police personnel and revenue department officials rushed to the location and conducted a spot inspection.

Authorities are examining the structure's exact condition and assessing whether prolonged rain damage caused the fatal collapse.

The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of old and dilapidated houses amid the ongoing monsoon and pre-monsoon rains in Karnataka.

Local residents have urged authorities to identify vulnerable structures in rural and semi-urban areas to prevent similar tragedies during heavy rainfall. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
