Kalyan Banerjee claims BJP workers assaulted him near a police station while he was heading to submit a complaint over post-election violence

Kolkata: Fresh political tensions have erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he was assaulted by BJP workers near a police station in Hooghly district. The incident reportedly occurred when the senior TMC leader was on his way to submit a memorandum regarding post-election violence in the region.

According to the allegations, the incident took place near the Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district. A video circulating on social media purportedly shows Banerjee lying on the ground while a crowd gathers around him. The footage has sparked political controversy, with both parties expected to intensify their accusations in the coming days.

Kalyan Banerjee Attack Allegations
Speaking to the media after the incident, Banerjee accused BJP workers of targeting him and physically assaulting him. He claimed that he was travelling alone when a group of BJP supporters allegedly abused him using offensive language and struck him on the head with a deuce ball.
"I was travelling alone and had no supporters with me. BJP workers abused me and hit me on the head with a deuce ball. People should decide why MPs are being repeatedly targeted," Banerjee alleged.
Following the alleged attack, TMC workers gathered near the police station and staged a protest, raising slogans against the BJP and demanding action against those responsible.

West Bengal Political Violence Row
The incident comes just a day after another controversy involving TMC National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. He was reportedly targeted during a visit to South 24 Parganas district, where protesters allegedly threw stones, eggs and footwear at his convoy.

Abhishek Banerjee had travelled to Sonarpur to meet families reportedly affected by post-election violence. The alleged attack quickly became a major political flashpoint in the state.

TMC Blames BJP for Attacks
Following the incidents, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating political violence against TMC leaders. She also alleged that pressure was being exerted on hospitals and doctors who treated Abhishek Banerjee after the incident.
The BJP has yet to officially respond to the latest allegations made by Kalyan Banerjee. Meanwhile, the incidents have further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling TMC and the BJP in West Bengal.
Authorities are expected to examine available video footage and gather statements from witnesses as part of any official inquiry into the alleged assault.
