Police uncover a criminal conspiracy as an old Voter ID forgery leads to a murder investigation notice for innocent citizenBengaluru: In a chilling revelation of how digital identity theft can lead to life-altering legal consequences, the Bengaluru police have uncovered a sophisticated document forgery racket. A 36-year-old innocent man, identified as L.S. Puneeth, found himself embroiled in a high-profile murder investigation after miscreants allegedly manipulated his decades-old identification records to facilitate a violent crime. The Varthuran police have now registered a fresh criminal case regarding the misuse of government documents and criminal conspiracy.
Identity Theft Fuels Violent Crime in Bengaluru
The incident serves as a stark warning regarding the security of personal identification documents. Investigations revealed that an old Voter ID belonging to Puneeth, a resident of Lakkondanahalli in Hoskote taluk, was illegally altered. A criminal gang substituted Puneeth’s original photograph with that of another individual to procure a SIM card. This fraudulently obtained mobile number was subsequently utilized to coordinate a notorious murder, leading law enforcement agencies directly to the doorstep of an unsuspecting civilian.
Marathahalli Police Issue Notice to Innocent Resident
The gravity of the situation surfaced when the Marathahalli sub-division police issued an official notice to Puneeth, demanding his appearance before an investigating officer. This summons was linked to a brutal murder case recorded in 2024. During the technical analysis of the Call Detail Records (CDR), the police traced the SIM card's registration address to Varthur, Bengaluru. Following this digital trail, investigators arrived at Puneeth’s residence, marking the beginning of a legal nightmare for the victim of identity theft.
The 2024 Varthur Murder Investigation Details
The roots of the case trace back to September 18, 2024, when a gang of nine individuals allegedly abducted and murdered 23-year-old N. Revanth Kumar, a resident of Sulikunte Colony in Varthur. To evade detection, one of the primary assailants purchased a SIM card from a retail outlet near Muthanallur Cross using Puneeth’s forged credentials. While the murder took place under the jurisdiction of the Bagalur police in Tamil Nadu, the logistical trail was firmly planted in Bengaluru's outskirts through forged documentation.
Discovery of 2009 Voter ID Forgery
Upon appearing at the police station on May 2, 2026, Puneeth was presented with the evidence linking him to the crime. He clarified to the authorities that the Voter ID in question was issued to him in 2009. However, a physical inspection confirmed that while the textual data remained his, the photograph had been meticulously replaced. This verification proved that the killers had engaged in personation and forgery to create a buffer between themselves and the law, nearly succeeding in framing an innocent man for their capital offence.
Legal Action Against Document Misuse and Conspiracy
Following the clarification, Puneeth filed a formal complaint at the Varthur police station to protect his legal standing. The police have subsequently registered a new First Information Report (FIR) against the accused gang members under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal conspiracy, cheating, and personation. While the nine-member gang involved in Revanth’s murder has been apprehended, this secondary case focuses specifically on the breach of document security and the victimised civilian’s identity.
