Dharwad: A shocking incident has been reported from Dharwad Central Jail, where an undertrial prisoner allegedly died by suicide inside the prison premises, raising serious questions over jail security and inmate monitoring systems.

The deceased has been identified as Mahantesh Kumbara (29), a resident of Nargund in Gadag district. He was lodged in judicial custody in connection with a POCSO case and had been recently shifted from Gadag jail to Dharwad Central Jail a few days ago.

Prison Security Under Scanner After Suicide Incident
According to initial reports, the inmate was found hanging inside the jail on Saturday under unclear circumstances. Jail authorities immediately alerted the police, following which a team from Dharwad Rural Police reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection.

Officials have confirmed that a case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to determine how the incident occurred inside a high-security prison facility.

Investigation Initiated Into Custodial Death
Authorities are now probing possible lapses in jail supervision, monitoring protocols, and internal security measures. Statements from jail staff and inmates are expected to be recorded as part of the investigation process.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further procedural steps will be taken based on forensic findings.

As the inquiry continues, officials have assured that all aspects of the case, including potential negligence or procedural failure, will be thoroughly examined.
