Chennai: Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 ended on a historic note as the state recorded a massive 84% voter turnout, the highest in 74 years, according to Election Commission data.

Polling began at 7 AM across the state and concluded at 6 PM, with voters who had entered polling booths before the deadline allowed to cast their votes afterward.
The stunning turnout is being seen as one of the biggest democratic mobilisations in the state’s political history.

Out of 5.73 crore eligible voters, nearly 4.71 crore people reportedly exercised their franchise in a single-phase election held across all 234 constituencies.

Historic Turnout Since 1952
This is the highest voter turnout in Tamil Nadu since the first elections after Independence in 1952, breaking multiple past records.

The state’s previous high in recent decades came in 2011, when turnout stood at around 78%. The 2026 figure of 84% has now surpassed that benchmark comfortably.
“Tamil Nadu has sent a powerful message through the ballot box.”
