Royal Challengers Bengaluru post 240/4 as Virat Kohli, Phil Salt shine; Mumbai Indians fall short despite late fight at Wankhede Stadium

Mumbai: Royal Challengers Bengaluru delivered a commanding performance to defeat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in a high-scoring encounter at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday in IPL 2026.

Batting first, RCB put up a massive 240/4 in 20 overs, setting a daunting target and putting immediate pressure on the Mumbai batting lineup.

RCB’s Batting Blitz Sets the Tone

The innings was powered by an explosive start and consistent middle-order acceleration. Phil Salt led the charge with a blistering 78 off 36 balls, dismantling the Mumbai bowling attack with aggressive stroke play.

Skipper Rajat Patidar played a captain’s knock, smashing 53 off just 20 balls, while Virat Kohli anchored the innings with a composed 50 off 38 balls.

Tim David provided the finishing touch with a quickfire 34 off 16 balls*, ensuring RCB crossed the 240 mark.

Mumbai Indians’ Chase Falls Short

Chasing 241, the Mumbai Indians responded with intent but ultimately finished at 222/5 in 20 overs, falling short despite a strong late surge.

Sherfane Rutherford kept Mumbai in the contest with a sensational 71 off 31 balls, showcasing power-hitting under pressure.

Hardik Pandya contributed 40 off 22 balls, while Ryan Rickelton added 37 off 22 balls, but the target proved just out of reach.

RCB Bowlers Hold Nerve

RCB’s bowling unit delivered at crucial moments to contain the chase. Suyash Sharma picked up two key wickets, while Jacob Duffy, Rasikh Salam, and Krunal Pandya chipped in with one wicket each.

Their ability to break partnerships and restrict boundaries in the death overs proved decisive.

Match Turning Point

RCB’s explosive middle overs, led by Salt and Patidar, created the cushion that ultimately made the difference. Despite Mumbai’s late charge, the required run rate remained too steep in the final overs.
