School Education and Literacy Department, Karnataka, invites objections within 7 days as the total SSLC marks may drop from 625 to 525
Bengaluru: The School Education and Literacy Department, Karnataka, has issued a draft notification proposing a shift from marks to grades for SSLC third language subjects, a move that could affect lakhs of students across the state.
Under the proposed system, the overall marks for SSLC would be reduced from 625 to 525, marking a significant shift in how results are evaluated.
How Third Language Grades Will Be Decided
According to the draft notification, students in third-language and NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) subjects would receive grades based on their marks.
The proposed grading pattern is:
- A Grade: 80 to 100 marks
- B Grade: 50 to 79 marks
- C Grade: Up to 49 marks
Officials clarified that these grades will not directly indicate pass or fail status, but will serve as a performance classification.
This reform may change how students and schools view scoring pressure in language subjects.
Why Total Marks Will Reduce
Since marks for the third language would no longer be counted in the conventional total, the overall SSLC result total is proposed to be recalculated from 625 marks to 525 marks.
This could affect rank comparisons, cut-off discussions, and merit interpretations unless clarified further.
Public Given 7 Days to Respond
The department has invited objections and suggestions from the public. Citizens, parents, institutions, and experts can submit feedback within seven days to the Additional Chief Secretary of the department.
Result Date Likely Soon
Meanwhile, SSLC answer paper evaluation is already underway, and results are expected around April 24, according to reports.
High Court PIL Earlier Dismissed
A public interest litigation challenging the grade system had earlier been dismissed by the High Court, which reportedly imposed costs after noting that the petition relied mainly on media reports without full official documentation.
