From conflict zones to energy security, India leverages strategic ties with Azerbaijan and Armenia to assist in evacuations from Iran, showcasing powerful foreign policy outreach

New Delhi: In a remarkable display of strategic diplomacy, India is scripting a new narrative on the global stage as even bitter rivals Azerbaijan and Armenia have come forward to assist New Delhi in evacuating its citizens from crisis-hit Iran. The development underscores India’s growing geopolitical influence and balanced foreign policy amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Rivals Turn Partners in India’s Evacuation Mission
Despite their long-standing hostility, Azerbaijan and Armenia extended crucial support to India’s evacuation efforts. While Azerbaijan facilitated the safe passage of Indian nationals through its land borders, Armenia assisted in bringing back Indian fishermen stranded in Iran.

India expressed formal gratitude to both nations, highlighting how diplomatic bridges built over time are yielding results during crises.

“Thank you to Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and the Government of Armenia for helping bring Indian fishermen from Iran,” said S. Jaishankar in a public message.

Over 200 Indians Evacuated via Azerbaijan
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, around 204 Indian nationals successfully crossed into Azerbaijan from Iran, with many already returning home and others expected shortly.

“204 Indian citizens have exited Iran via Azerbaijan and are being brought back safely,” stated Randhir Jaiswal during a media briefing.

This coordinated effort reflects India’s multi-channel diplomatic engagement in ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad.

Energy Security Intact Despite Global Turmoil
Even as the Middle East faces instability, India has managed to secure uninterrupted energy supplies. Despite pressure and sanctions led by the United States, India has continued importing oil from Russia, maintaining price stability domestically.

Additionally, Iran has kept the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz accessible, allowing multiple Indian vessels to pass through even during heightened tensions.

India’s Balanced Foreign Policy Gains Global Attention
India’s ability to engage with both allies and adversaries simultaneously is being viewed as a hallmark of its evolving diplomacy. From maintaining ties with Russia to securing cooperation from rival nations like Armenia and Azerbaijan, New Delhi is demonstrating pragmatic and interest-driven foreign relations.

As geopolitical uncertainties deepen, India’s approach reflects a carefully calibrated strategy that prioritises citizen safety, economic stability, and international cooperation, setting it apart in an increasingly polarised world.
