Celebration Turns Into Mourning as 27-Year-Old Techie Swept Away While Swimming in Bhadra River Near Bannur


Chikkamagaluru: In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves across Karnataka, a 27-year-old IT employee from Bengaluru drowned in the Bhadra River near Bannur village in Narasimharajapura taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. The tragic mishap occurred when the victim, who had arrived to attend a friend’s wedding, ventured into the river for a swim and was swept away by strong currents, turning a moment of celebration into a scene of grief.


The deceased has been identified as Abhishek, a native of Gadag, who was employed at a private IT firm in Bengaluru. According to initial reports, Abhishek had travelled with friends to Bannur village near Balehonnur and was staying at a local homestay to attend the wedding.


Swimming Attempt Ends in Tragedy

On Sunday morning, Abhishek reportedly entered the Bhadra River for a swim, unaware of the dangerous undercurrents. Within minutes, he lost control and went missing in the water, triggering panic among his friends and locals present at the scene. This incident came to light on Monday.


As soon as the incident came to light, fire brigade personnel and local residents launched an intensive search operation. After several hours of relentless efforts, Abhishek’s body was recovered from the river near Bannur village.

“Despite immediate rescue efforts, the strong currents made it difficult to trace him quickly. The body was recovered after an extensive search,” sources said.

Wedding Turns Into Mourning

The tragic incident has left family members and friends devastated, as what began as a joyous wedding gathering ended in unimaginable loss. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of shock and grief as the news spread among attendees.


Police officials from the Balehonnur Police Station have registered a case and initiated further legal procedures. Authorities have also issued a cautionary advisory urging visitors to avoid entering unfamiliar water bodies, especially during peak flow conditions.
