Former MP Prajwal Revanna has been remanded in police custody for two days after a mobile phone was recovered from his Parappana Agrahara prison barrack, prompting further investigation.
Bengaluru: Former MP Prajwal Revanna has been remanded in police custody for two days in connection with the alleged illegal possession and use of a mobile phone inside Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. The 42nd ACMM Court in Bengaluru passed the order on Tuesday, September 8, after police sought custody to investigate how the prohibited device reached the prison and who facilitated its use.
The case relates to a mobile phone recovered during a Central Crime Branch (CCB) raid at the prison on August 11. Another inmate, identified as Prathap Rai, is also named as an accused in the case and has been remanded in police custody along with Revanna.
Prajwal Revanna Sent To Police Custody For Two Days
Police sought custody of Revanna and Prathap to question them about the circumstances surrounding the mobile phone’s presence inside the high-security prison.
Investigators are particularly examining how the device entered the jail, who provided it and whether anyone inside the prison helped facilitate its use. The custody will allow investigators to question both accused in connection with the alleged violation of prison rules.
A case was registered against Revanna and Prathap following the recovery of the prohibited device. Reports have said the investigation is also examining the role of people who may have assisted inmates in accessing mobile phones inside the prison.
Mobile Phone Found During CCB Raid At Parappana Agrahara
The mobile phone was recovered during a CCB search of the high-security section of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison on August 11. The raid reportedly involved a large team of CCB personnel and targeted high-profile prisoners and other inmates.
Officials recovered a Redmi 5G smartphone along with a charger, a pen drive and a notebook from the barrack shared by Revanna and Prathap Rai. The phone reportedly had applications including WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video installed on it.
According to reports on the case, the applications were password-protected. Investigators are examining the device and other available evidence as part of the probe into its use inside the prison.
Police Probe How Phone Reached Jail
The key focus of the investigation is how the mobile phone entered the prison and who helped make it available to the inmates.
Prison authorities had earlier launched an inquiry after the recovery. The Assistant Superintendent of the prison was suspended, while a show-cause notice was issued to the prison superintendent following the security lapse.
The prison administration has also been examining the possibility of assistance from people inside the facility. The investigation is expected to establish whether the phone was brought into the prison by an outsider, obtained through prison personnel or accessed through another channel.
Prajwal Revanna Was Earlier Seen Using Phone In Jail
The mobile phone recovery came shortly after a video purportedly showing Prajwal Revanna using a mobile phone inside his prison cell surfaced online.
Reports also raised questions over his use of civilian clothes instead of the prescribed prison uniform. Prison authorities subsequently investigated the alleged lapses and the circumstances under which the footage was recorded.
The developments triggered wider questions over security arrangements at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, particularly concerning the access of high-profile inmates to prohibited electronic devices.
Revanna Serving Life Sentence In Rape Case
Prajwal Revanna is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction in one of the rape cases against him. He was convicted by the Special Court for People’s Representatives in August 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He continues to face other cases that are pending before the courts.
The latest police custody order is separate from the cases for which Revanna is serving his sentence and relates specifically to the alleged possession and use of a prohibited mobile phone inside the prison.
The two-day custody is expected to give investigators an opportunity to question Revanna and Prathap Rai and establish the chain through which the device allegedly reached the jail.
