Cracks have developed in a retaining wall near the Sringeri Taluk Office, prompting evacuation measures and an expert inspection amid fears of further damage during the monsoon

A large retaining wall near the Sringeri Taluk Office has developed significant cracks following continuous monsoon rainfall, raising concerns over the safety of nearby houses and commercial establishments. The local administration has advised residents to vacate vulnerable structures while an expert team from Bengaluru has been called to assess the situation.

Chikkamagaluru: Concern is mounting in Sringeri after major cracks appeared in a retaining wall constructed near the Sringeri Taluk Office, with local authorities warning that continued heavy rainfall could worsen the damage.

The wall, built to protect the area following a collapse during the 2024 monsoon, now shows visible structural cracks only a few months after its completion. Officials have initiated precautionary measures and sought an expert assessment.

Retaining Wall Cracks Raise Safety Concerns in Sringeri

According to local officials, the retaining wall is approximately 50 feet high and 120 feet wide.

Residents say the cracks have widened steadily over the past few days as persistent rainfall continues across the region.

The wall overlooks:

  • Four residential houses
  • More than 18 commercial shops
  • A busy public road leading to Sringeri Sharada Peetham

People living and working in the area fear that any further deterioration could endanger nearby properties and disrupt traffic on one of the town's important routes.

Residents have expressed concern that continued rainfall could aggravate the structural damage if immediate stabilisation measures are not undertaken.

Wall Built After 2024 Collapse Faces Fresh Structural Issues

The retaining wall was reportedly constructed at an estimated cost of ₹2 crore after the earlier structure at the same location collapsed during the 2024 monsoon season.

However, locals allege that the newly constructed wall has developed extensive cracks within months of completion.

Some residents have questioned the quality of construction, alleging that the interior of the wall was largely filled with soil instead of being adequately reinforced.

These claims have not been independently verified, and officials have not yet commented on the allegations regarding the quality of construction.

BJP Delegation Inspects Site

A delegation of BJP leaders led by former minister D.N. Jeevaraj visited the location to inspect the damaged retaining wall.

Following the inspection, the delegation criticised the execution of the project and urged the administration to take immediate corrective measures to safeguard nearby residents and businesses.

The leaders also called for an inquiry into the quality of the construction work.

Administration Orders Precautionary Evacuation

Responding to the situation, Sringeri Tahsildar Anup confirmed that precautionary measures have already been initiated.

According to the Tahsildar, occupants of the houses and shops located below the retaining wall have been instructed to vacate as a safety measure.

"A crack has appeared in the retaining wall. We have instructed the residents and shop owners below the wall to vacate. An expert team from Bengaluru is arriving to inspect the site, and further action will be taken based on its assessment," Tahsildar Anup said.

The taluk administration has also established an emergency response mechanism and instructed officials to closely monitor the condition of the structure.

Expert Team From Bengaluru to Assess Structural Stability

Authorities said a team of structural experts from Bengaluru has been deputed to inspect the retaining wall and recommend immediate as well as long-term safety measures.

Based on the technical assessment, officials will decide whether reinforcement, repairs or reconstruction of the retaining wall is necessary.

Until the inspection is completed, residents have been advised to avoid the affected area and cooperate with precautionary measures implemented by the administration.
