Farmers in Shivamogga district have reported the theft of copper electric cables from over 40 agricultural pump sets installed near the Tunga River. The incident has caused losses estimated at around Rs. 3 lakh, prompting demands for stricter police action and a special investigation team.


Shivamogga: Farmers in Shivamogga district have reported large-scale theft of copper electric cables from agricultural pump sets, with more than 40 motor rooms allegedly targeted by unidentified miscreants in villages under the Kudli Gram Panchayat limits.


The incident has caused financial losses to farmers who had installed pump sets near the banks of the Tunga River to irrigate their fields during the ongoing agricultural season.

Farmers alleged that copper electric cables connected to more than 40 agricultural pump sets were stolen in a series of thefts.

More Than 40 Pump Sets Targeted in Shivamogga

According to farmers, the thefts were reported from areas surrounding Bhadrapura, Javalli and Kudli, where agricultural pump sets had been installed to draw water from the Tunga River.


The accused allegedly broke open the locks of motor rooms before removing the copper electric cables connected to the pump sets.


The thefts have disrupted irrigation at a time when farmers depend on functioning pump sets for crop cultivation.

Farmers Report Losses of Around Rs. 3 Lakh

Farmers estimated that the stolen electric cables were collectively worth around ₹3 lakh.


They said repeated thefts of agricultural motors, pump sets and electric cables have become a growing concern in rural parts of the district.


A complaint has been lodged with the Holehonnur Police Station, and police have begun an investigation into the incident.

Farmers have urged police to identify those involved and prevent similar thefts in agricultural areas.

Demand for Special Police Team

Following the incident, farmers have appealed to the police department to constitute a special investigation team to detect those responsible for the thefts.


They have also sought increased night patrolling in villages and agricultural fields to prevent further incidents targeting farming equipment.


The investigation is underway, and police are yet to announce any arrests in connection with the case.
