Rice prices across Karnataka have surged by Rs10 to Rs20 per kilogram due to supply shortages and rising exports, adding fresh pressure on household budgets already strained by inflation
\Consumers across Karnataka are facing another major increase in the cost of essential commodities as rice prices have risen sharply in wholesale and retail markets. With several rice varieties becoming costlier by ₹10 to ₹20 per kilogram, households already dealing with higher fuel, LPG, and vegetable prices are now confronting additional pressure on monthly expenses. Traders attribute the increase to tightening domestic supplies and growing export demand.

Bengaluru: After recent increases in cooking gas, fuel, and vegetable prices, Karnataka consumers are now facing another major blow to their monthly budgets. Rice, the staple food consumed by millions of households across the state, has seen prices rise sharply, with rates climbing by Rs. 10 to Rs. 20 per kilogram in major markets.

The sudden surge has intensified the financial burden on middle-class and low-income families already grappling with the rising cost of living. Traders warn that relief may not be in sight anytime soon, as the factors driving the increase are expected to persist for several more months.

Rice Price Hike in Karnataka Deepens Inflation Concerns
Several varieties of rice sold in Karnataka's wholesale and retail markets have become significantly more expensive over the past few weeks. Consumers who rely heavily on rice as their primary food staple are now being forced to adjust household spending patterns to accommodate the unexpected rise.
The latest increase comes at a time when families are already struggling with higher prices for LPG cylinders, petrol, diesel, essential food items, and vegetables.
Supply Shortage and Export Demand Fuel Price Rise
According to traders, the primary reason behind the spike is a widening gap between domestic demand and available supply.

With demand remaining strong across the country, rice stocks in domestic markets have reportedly tightened. At the same time, increased export activity has reduced the availability of quality rice varieties within local markets, exerting upward pressure on retail prices.

Merchants say the shortage has disrupted normal market dynamics, leading to frequent revisions in prices across different rice categories.
"Demand remains high, but supply has not kept pace. Exports have further reduced domestic availability," traders explained.
Consumers Reduce Purchases as Sales Slow
The rising prices are beginning to influence consumer behaviour.

According to trader Arun Paramesh, many customers have started purchasing smaller quantities of rice to manage their monthly expenses. The reduced buying capacity has also affected overall sales volumes, with retailers witnessing a noticeable slowdown despite higher market prices.

The development reflects the growing pressure inflation is placing on everyday consumption patterns.

No Immediate Relief Until New Crop Arrives
Market experts believe consumers may have to endure elevated rice prices until fresh paddy harvests enter the supply chain.

The new crop is expected to arrive only around November, meaning the current shortage could continue for several months. Until then, traders anticipate that the mismatch between demand and supply will likely keep prices elevated.

Rice merchant Suresh warned that if current conditions persist, premium rice varieties could witness further increases and may even cross the Rs. 100 per kilogram mark in the coming months.

Rising Cost of Essentials Tests Household Budgets
The latest increase in rice prices has added to growing public frustration over the escalating cost of essential commodities.

From fuel and cooking gas to vegetables and groceries, consumers are facing sustained inflation across multiple sectors. With rice now joining the list of expensive essentials, families across Karnataka are being forced to rethink household budgets and prioritise spending more carefully.

As the festive and agricultural seasons approach, all eyes will remain on market supply trends and the arrival of fresh harvests that could eventually provide some respite.
