The Renukaswamy murder case involving actor Darshan and 16 others enters the trial stage in Bengaluru as the court begins witness examination

The high-profile Renukaswamy murder case has entered its crucial trial stage in Bengaluru, with proceedings beginning before the CCH-59 Sessions Court. Actor Darshan, Pavithra Gowda, and 15 other accused are set to face trial as the court begins examining witnesses and evidence in the 2024 murder case. The Supreme Court has earlier ordered a fast-tracked trial process.

Bengaluru: The high-profile Renukaswamy murder case has reached a decisive stage in Bengaluru, with the trial of all 17 accused, including actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and Pavithra Gowda, beginning before a new judge at the CCH-59 Sessions Court.

The proceedings, presided over by Judge Sujatha Madivalappa Sambrani, mark the formal commencement of the trial phase in a case that has drawn widespread public and legal attention since it surfaced in 2024.

With the trial now underway, the court is set to examine witnesses, review documentary evidence, and hear detailed arguments from both prosecution and defence.

Legal experts note that this phase will be crucial in determining the individual roles of each accused and evaluating the strength of evidence collected during the investigation.

The case involves a total of 17 accused, often referred to as the “D gang,” and is being closely monitored due to its high-profile nature and public interest.

"The trial will focus on witness testimony, documentary evidence, and detailed cross-examination of all accused."

Accused to Appear via Video Conference and In Person

Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and co-accused Pavithra Gowda are expected to appear before the court through video conferencing from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

Other accused persons are likely to be produced physically before the court during the proceedings.

Authorities are also considering whether the trial should be conducted on a continuous basis or multiple days a week to ensure faster disposal of the case.

Background of the Renukaswamy Murder Case

The case dates back to June 2024, when the body of 33-year-old Renukaswamy was allegedly found in a stormwater drain in Bengaluru. Investigations later led to the arrest of multiple individuals, including actor Darshan and Pavithra Gowda.

According to prosecution claims, Renukaswamy had allegedly sent objectionable messages to Pavithra Gowda, which is believed to have triggered a series of events leading to his abduction and assault.

Police investigations later resulted in the arrest of several individuals linked to the case, forming one of the most discussed criminal trials in recent Karnataka legal history.

Supreme Court Intervention and Bail Reversal

The case saw major legal developments when the Karnataka High Court granted bail to Darshan and other accused in 2024. However, the Supreme Court of India later cancelled the bail in August 2025, stating that “no one is above the rule of law” and raising concerns over procedural issues and alleged witness intimidation.

The apex court’s intervention significantly reshaped the direction of the case, reinforcing the seriousness of the allegations and ensuring continued judicial scrutiny.

Fast-Track Trial Ordered by Supreme Court

In recent proceedings, the Supreme Court declined immediate bail pleas filed by Darshan and directed the Karnataka government to expedite the trial process.

The court instructed that at least 60 key witnesses should be examined within one year to ensure timely progress of the case. It also allowed the accused to approach the trial court again for bail if there is no substantial progress within the stipulated timeframe.

These directions have added pressure on the judicial process to conclude proceedings efficiently while ensuring fairness and due process.

High-Profile Case Under Intense Legal Scrutiny

As the trial begins, the Renukaswamy murder case continues to attract significant public and media attention due to the involvement of prominent film personalities and the severity of charges.

Legal observers believe the upcoming phase of witness examination and evidence presentation will be critical in shaping the final outcome of the case.

The proceedings are expected to continue over the coming months as the court moves through detailed stages of trial, marking one of the most closely watched criminal cases in Karnataka.
