Iran and the UAE issue contrasting statements as regional tensions intensify across the Gulf and Middle East

Tehran: Conflicting claims emerged on Wednesday following reports of military activity linked to Iran in the Gulf region, as Iranian media, United States officials, and regional governments presented sharply different accounts of recent missile and drone operations targeting American military facilities.

The developments came after reports of an explosion-like sound near Qeshm Island in southern Iran and renewed scrutiny over Iran’s overnight military operation against US-linked targets in the Middle East. The situation has further heightened concerns over regional security, particularly around the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.

Explosion Report Near Qeshm Island Raises Questions

Semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr News initially reported that an explosion had been heard near Qeshm Island, citing local sources familiar with the incident. The report noted that the exact cause of the sound was not immediately known and suggested it could have originated from a distant blast or military-related activity in the nearby Strait of Hormuz.

However, local authorities later sought to clarify the situation.

“No explosion occurred on Qeshm Island, and the sound heard in the area did not originate from the island,” the governor of Qeshm reportedly stated.

The clarification came amid heightened regional tensions, where even unconfirmed reports of military activity have drawn significant international attention due to the strategic importance of Gulf shipping routes and energy infrastructure.

Iran Missile Attack Claims Challenge US Assessment

Meanwhile, Iranian media linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) published a contrasting assessment of Iran’s recent missile and drone operation targeting US military facilities across the region.

According to a report carried by Fars News, citing a military source, Iran claims that approximately 70 per cent of its intended targets were successfully struck during the operation. The source stated that the assessment was based on satellite imagery and intelligence information gathered from field sources and transmitted to Iran’s foreign intelligence apparatus.

The report claimed that long-range ballistic missiles and drones penetrated defensive systems protecting US military installations and successfully reached pre-designated targets at Azraq in Jordan, Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

“The assessment is based on satellite images and information received from field sources,” the military source was quoted as saying.

The Iranian claim stands in direct contrast to earlier assessments reported by US officials.

US Says Most Iranian Missiles Were Intercepted

According to initial US evaluations, nearly all missiles and drones launched during the Iranian operation were intercepted before reaching their intended targets.

American officials indicated that regional air defence systems and allied military capabilities successfully neutralised the majority of incoming threats, significantly limiting any potential damage to US facilities.

The differing accounts underscore the ongoing information battle surrounding military operations in the region, with both sides presenting conflicting narratives regarding the effectiveness of the attacks and defensive responses.

UAE Condemns Attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan

As regional governments assessed the situation, the United Arab Emirates issued a strong diplomatic response, condemning the missile and drone attacks directed toward Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.

In a statement released by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attacks were described as a violation of the sovereignty of the affected nations and a direct threat to regional security and stability.

The ministry reiterated the UAE’s full support for Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan and affirmed its backing for any measures taken by those countries to safeguard national security and protect their citizens.

“The UAE stands in full solidarity with Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan and supports all actions taken to preserve their security and stability,” the ministry said.

Middle East Security Concerns Intensify

The latest developments highlight the increasingly fragile security environment across the Middle East, where military confrontations, missile exchanges and geopolitical rivalries continue to shape regional stability. With competing claims over military outcomes and growing diplomatic reactions from Gulf nations, international attention remains focused on potential implications for security, energy markets and maritime routes in the Gulf region.
