A Rs 2 crore hi-tech government hospital in Naregal is functioning with just one dentist, leaving hundreds of patients without access to essential healthcare services
Residents of Naregal town in Karnataka's Gadag district are facing significant healthcare challenges despite the presence of a Rs 2 crore government hospital. The Community Health Centre, upgraded under the National Health Mission, is operating with only one doctor, leaving thousands dependent on overstretched medical services and forcing many patients to seek treatment elsewhere.
Gadag: Despite the construction of a modern government hospital worth more than Rs 2 crore, residents of Naregal town in Karnataka's Gadag district continue to struggle for basic medical treatment due to an acute shortage of doctors and healthcare staff. What was envisioned as a major healthcare upgrade has now become a symbol of administrative neglect, forcing patients to endure long waits and inadequate treatment facilities.
The hospital, established under the National Health Mission (NHM), was upgraded from a Primary Health Centre to a Community Health Centre with the promise of delivering improved healthcare services to thousands of people in the region. However, the absence of adequate medical personnel has rendered much of the facility ineffective.
Doctor Shortage Cripples Healthcare Services in Naregal
Every day, hundreds of patients visit the 30-bed hospital seeking medical assistance. Yet, shockingly, the institution currently has only one doctor available for service—and that too a dental surgeon.
As a result, patients suffering from general illnesses, chronic conditions, maternal health issues, and medical emergencies are left with limited or no treatment options. Many are forced to travel to neighbouring towns and district hospitals, increasing both financial burden and health risks.
Residents have expressed outrage over the condition, questioning the purpose of investing crores of rupees in infrastructure without ensuring adequate staffing.
"The building is there, but doctors are not. Patients come with hope and return disappointed," local residents lamented.
Rs 2 Crore Hi-Tech Hospital Remains Underutilised
The hospital boasts a 30-bed capacity and was intended to function as a fully equipped healthcare centre catering to the growing population of Naregal and nearby villages.
However, due to severe manpower shortages, expensive medical equipment remains unused and covered in dust. Several sections of the facility reportedly resemble an abandoned structure rather than an active healthcare institution.
Healthcare standards require at least six doctors and approximately 30 supporting staff members, including nurses and technical personnel, for the hospital to function effectively. Yet those positions remain vacant.
The situation has fuelled public anger, with residents accusing authorities of failing to prioritise rural healthcare despite repeated appeals.
Medical Equipment Gathering Dust Amid Staff Shortage
Beyond the shortage of doctors, the lack of nurses and support staff has further weakened hospital operations.
Locals claim that the absence of maintenance personnel has also affected the upkeep of the building, resulting in deterioration of infrastructure that was built using public funds.
Residents fear that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, the hospital could become another example of wasted investment and missed opportunities in Karnataka's healthcare system.
Authorities Assure Recruitment Process Is Underway
Responding to the growing criticism, Gadag District Health Officer S.S. Nilagunda stated that proposals seeking additional doctors, healthcare workers, and essential medical supplies have already been submitted to the state government.
He further confirmed that recruitment through outsourcing mechanisms is currently in progress to address the staffing crisis.
However, locals insist that assurances alone are insufficient and demand immediate appointments to restore public confidence in the healthcare system.
Rural Healthcare Infrastructure Under Fresh Scrutiny
The Naregal hospital crisis has once again highlighted the gap between infrastructure development and service delivery in rural India. While government investments have succeeded in creating modern facilities, the absence of human resources threatens to undermine their purpose.
For the people of Naregal, the demand is simple fill vacant posts, operationalise the hospital fully, and ensure that quality healthcare reaches those who need it the most.
