Viral video from Secunderabad sparks outrage after SHO allegedly slaps and canes delivery worker during night patrol
Hyderabad: A police officer in Hyderabad’s Secunderabad area has come under intense public criticism after a viral video allegedly showed him slapping and beating a food delivery executive during a late-night patrol operation. The incident, which reportedly took place in the Ramgopalpet Police Station limits on May 7, has triggered widespread outrage across social media platforms, with several users questioning police conduct and the treatment of gig workers.
According to reports circulating online, the incident involved Station House Officer (SHO) B Suresh Kumar and a delivery executive identified as Azam, who was reportedly delivering ice cream orders during the early hours of the morning. The video, now widely shared on social media, allegedly shows the officer slapping Azam and hitting him with a baton while questioning him on the roadside around 3 am.
The delivery executive was reportedly working for Scoops Ice Cream and was out completing deliveries assigned through an online food delivery platform when the confrontation occurred during police night patrol checks.
Viral Video Triggers Public Outrage on Social Media
The incident rapidly gained attention after several social media users posted reactions condemning the alleged assault and raising concerns about the safety and dignity of gig workers operating during night hours.
One user, identified as Revathi on X, alleged that the delivery worker and his manager were “trashed, beaten and abused” despite being engaged in legitimate delivery work.
“Politicians give long speeches about Gig Workers’ rights and all, but this is the ground reality,” the user wrote while criticizing the alleged police behaviour.
Another social media user tagged senior police officials and demanded immediate attention toward what was described as “violent behaviour” by city police personnel.
Several online reactions also compared the alleged treatment of delivery workers with the handling of influential individuals and VIP motorists, with users accusing authorities of selective enforcement.
Incident Raises Questions Over Treatment of Gig Workers
The controversy has once again brought focus on the working conditions and safety concerns faced by gig economy workers, especially delivery executives operating during late-night hours in metropolitan cities.
Food delivery personnel frequently work overnight shifts to complete time-sensitive orders, often travelling through isolated roads and commercial areas during police patrol operations. Social media users argued that gig workers performing legitimate duties should not face physical harassment while on duty.
The viral video has intensified debate around accountability, use of force by law enforcement personnel, and the need for clear protocols while dealing with delivery workers during nighttime verification checks.
No Official Statement Released Yet
As of now, no official statement has been released by Hyderabad City Police or concerned authorities regarding the viral video or allegations made against the police officer involved in the incident.
It also remains unclear whether any departmental inquiry or internal review has been initiated following the circulation of the footage online.
The incident continues to attract strong reactions on social media, with many users demanding transparency, accountability, and action from senior police officials.
