Rescue teams race against time in Jabalpur as passengers remain missing; storm-triggered incident exposes safety concerns at Bargi Dam
Jabalpur: The tragic cruise boat accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur has turned deadlier, with the death toll rising to seven after rescuers recovered three more bodies on Friday. Authorities confirmed that search operations are still ongoing as several passengers remain missing.
Speaking on the incident, Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi stated that rescue teams are working around the clock to locate missing tourists. He assured that a detailed probe will follow, and strict action will be taken against those responsible.
Boat Carried 31 People Before Tragedy Struck
Officials revealed that the ill-fated cruise boat was carrying 29 passengers and two crew members when it overturned on Thursday evening after being hit by a sudden storm. So far, 16 people have been rescued, while the search continues for others feared trapped or missing.
The Bargi Dam, built on the Narmada River, has now become the centre of a massive rescue operation.
Army, NDRF, SDRF Join Massive Operation
State PWD Minister Rakesh Singh confirmed that teams from the Army, NDRF, and SDRF have been deployed for an overnight intensive search operation. Authorities are also using hydraulic cranes to retrieve the submerged boat from the reservoir.
“All possible resources are being deployed to trace the missing and ensure accountability,” officials stated.
Eyewitnesses Recount Terrifying Moments
According to eyewitnesses, strong winds and rough waters created panic onboard. Passengers reportedly pleaded with the crew to return to shore, but their cries went unheard amid the chaos. The boat eventually lost control, drifted, and capsized.
Local residents played a crucial role in the initial rescue, saving several passengers using ropes, especially those who were wearing life jackets.
