Petroleum Ministry directs daily briefings, warns against panic buying and black marketing, says LPG supply stable despite global tensions

New Delhi: In a decisive move to curb rising panic, the central government has cracked down on rumours surrounding LPG supply, directing all states and Union Territories to immediately control misinformation, hoarding, and black marketing.

The directive comes as misleading reports triggered public anxiety and panic buying of LPG cylinders in several parts of the country. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has written to Chief Secretaries across states, urging urgent intervention.

Centre Orders Daily Briefings to Counter Panic

The ministry has expressed concern that only 17 states and UTs are currently holding regular or intermittent press briefings, calling the effort inadequate in addressing public fears.

To ensure transparency, the Centre has now mandated daily senior-level press briefings, along with proactive dissemination of verified information through media and social platforms.

“Timely communication is crucial to reassure citizens that LPG supply is sufficient and distribution is functioning smoothly,” officials emphasized.

Strict Action Against Hoarding and Black Marketing

The government has also directed states to take strict enforcement measures against hoarding and black marketing, warning that such activities could worsen the situation.

Authorities have been asked to personally monitor developments and act swiftly to prevent any artificial shortage created by panic-driven demand.

No LPG Shortage, Government Reassures Public

Amid global concerns linked to tensions involving Iran, the Centre has categorically stated that India has adequate LPG reserves and there is no disruption in supply chains.

Officials stressed that panic buying is unnecessary and could strain distribution systems unnecessarily.

‘Crisis Turned Into Opportunity’ for Gas Infrastructure

Interestingly, the government is also using the current situation to accelerate reforms in the energy sector, particularly in expanding the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network.

Neeraj Mittal noted that the crisis has opened doors to strengthen domestic infrastructure and reduce dependence on LPG imports and subsidies.

Recent policy changes include faster approvals for pipeline projects, where delays in official response will now automatically lead to deemed clearance, ensuring rapid expansion of gas connectivity.

Push for Piped Gas Expansion Gains Momentum

The Centre is pushing for greater adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) as a long-term solution, aiming to enhance efficiency and cut costs for consumers.

With infrastructure expansion underway, India is positioning itself to transform its energy distribution landscape, even amid global uncertainties.
