Social media erupts after viral video claims truck driver was pressured to speak Kannada, users divided over language pride, respect and civic conduct
Bengaluru: A fresh language-related controversy has surfaced on X, triggering a sharp debate across Karnataka after a viral video alleged that a truck driver from another state was pressured to speak Kannada.
The video was shared by a user named 🔱🚩YATNAL HINDU SENE 🚩🔱 (@yathnalabhimani), who questioned the conduct of certain groups and warned that such incidents could damage the dignity of the Kannada language rather than promote it.
“He was simply here to deliver goods… forcing someone to speak Kannada for publicity only harms the value of the language,” the user wrote.
The post further argued that respectful communication naturally encourages language learning, while coercive behaviour could lead to social friction.
Some users objected to generalisations made in the post:
BidarKannadiga (@BidarKannadiga): “Our dialect may differ, but it is still Kannada. Don’t comment without understanding.”
Others pointed to peaceful coexistence and mutual respect:
J S Martin (@JSMartin1959): “When I don’t know a local language, I simply communicate politely. Most people cooperate.”
At the same time, some reactions expressed frustration over confrontational behaviour, calling for stricter action against those creating public disturbances.
Prasanna Rao (@Prasann83799700): “Such hooliganism needs to be dealt with firmly.”
While many advocate for promoting Kannada respectfully, others stress that enforcement through confrontation may be counterproductive.
Observers note that while preserving local language is important, ensuring mutual respect and lawful conduct remains equally critical.
