Kedarnath temple doors open on Akshaya Tritiya with elaborate rituals, thousands of devotees gather as Chardham Yatra gains momentum across Uttarakhand

Kedarnath: The sacred portals of Kedarnath Dham were officially opened for devotees today with full rituals, marking a significant moment in the annual Char Dham Yatra. The opening follows the earlier commencement of pilgrimages at Gangotri Dham and Yamunotri Dham on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya.

With this, the spiritual journey across Uttarakhand has entered its peak phase, drawing lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad. The final shrine in the sequence, Badrinath Dham, is scheduled to open on April 23.

Temple Adorned with 51 Quintals of Flowers

The temple complex witnessed grand floral decoration, with nearly 51 quintals of fresh marigold flowers sourced from Rishikesh and surrounding areas.

As the temple gates opened, chants of “Bam Bam Bhole” and “Jai Kedar” echoed across the Kedar valley, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere.

“The opening ceremony was witnessed by thousands, marking a deeply emotional and divine moment for devotees.”

Spiritual Significance of Kedarnath

Kedarnath holds immense religious importance as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, revered across Hindu traditions.

During winter months, when heavy snowfall forces closure of the shrine, the deity is worshipped at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where rituals continue for six months.

The shrine is also regarded as the first Kedar among the Panch Kedars, making it a central pilgrimage site.

Mythological Roots Linked to the Mahabharata

According to Hindu scriptures, the origins of Kedarnath date back to the Mahabharata era.

It is believed that after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva to atone for their sins. Shiva, disguised as a bull, disappeared into the ground, and the location where his back appeared is now worshipped as Kedarnath.

The temple was later revived and renovated by Adi Shankaracharya, further strengthening its spiritual legacy.

Massive Devotee Footfall Expected

With all four shrines opening in succession, authorities expect a massive surge in pilgrim numbers in the coming days. The Chardham Yatra remains one of India’s most significant religious journeys, symbolising faith, devotion and spiritual liberation.
