Three unidentified men allegedly looted a 22-year-old shop owner after luring him with Aadhaar update request; CCTV footage under scrutiny

New Delhi: In a shocking incident that has raised fresh concerns over street-level crime in the national capital, a young shopkeeper was allegedly robbed of Rs14 lakh at gunpoint and knifepoint in the Model Town area of northwest New Delhi, police officials confirmed on Saturday.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Friday when three unidentified men entered the shop of a 22-year-old businessman and allegedly threatened him with a firearm and a sharp weapon, before fleeing with a large sum of cash. The matter was reported after a PCR call was received at the Model Town police station, triggering an immediate response from local law enforcement.

Incident Took Place Inside Shop Premises
A senior officer from Delhi Police stated that the complainant, identified as Kartik, a resident of Mahendru Enclave, was inside his shop at the time of the crime. Kartik told investigators that he was watching a film when the suspects walked in under the pretext of updating their mobile numbers linked to Aadhaar records.

Robbery Executed Using Deception and Threats
Once inside, the trio allegedly brandished a gun and a knife, intimidating the shopkeeper and forcing him to hand over Rs14 lakh in cash, which was reportedly kept inside the shop. After committing the robbery, the accused fled the scene before police teams could arrive.
“The suspects gained the victim’s trust by pretending to seek Aadhaar-related assistance and then threatened him at gunpoint. Efforts are on to identify and trace the accused,” a senior police officer said.
Police Investigation Underway
Police officials confirmed that CCTV footage from nearby establishments is being examined to track the movements of the suspects. A case has been registered, and multiple teams have been formed to identify the accused and recover the stolen money. The incident took place in Model Town, an area that has seen a rise in similar deception-based crimes in recent months.

Authorities have urged shopkeepers and residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity, especially individuals seeking sensitive documentation-related services without proper authorisation.
